Mazen’s Fitness & Health App List
Sep 4th
A friend of mine asked me about health & fitness apps I use on my iPhone, and since I am going to get a new iPod touch, I thought I share the list of those apps with all of you.
Sure, there are some apps I like and use when I go to the gym. Some of them are for weight lifting to keep logs and some are for my cardio, while others are to track my food and caloric consumption.
Mazen’s Favorite Fitness & Health App List:
1- All-In-Fitness: This app also offers video instructions, which could be very helpful.
2- SIMGYM: You can sync with the SimGym website to monitor your progress, you can also load workouts from the site.
3- ITGO: (I use the Japanese Tabata workout system now) and this app helps a lot especially if you need something to switch your music playlist depending on your workout intensity.
4- lolo: haven’t tried this one yet, but it looks promising, so will write a post after I try it out.
5- Lose it: This app has been there for some time, and it simply works if you use it daily, amazing when you really want to lose weight. Oh and it is free.
Now you see why I need an iPod touch for the gym, in the past I use my nano with a GymBoss timer combo, but I want to use one device to do both jobs and log my info at the same time, instead of carrying a paper and pen as well. (there is a GymBoss app on the app store, but I didn’t like the UI).
Another downside to the GymBoss+iPod nano is that when you do Tabata, you shift from High Speed Intensity to Low Intensity, and if the music doesn’t shift according to your intensity, you tend to lose your focus.
So now that Ramadan is almost over, it is time to gear up and get ready to shed the weight you gained during this month.

Want More Books to Read?
Apr 10th

Many people want more out of their iPods, iPhones, and now iPads, since all of them are great devices to read books and articles.
So to get more books (for Free) you can visit Project Gutenberg, where you can find over 30,000 books to download on your PC or Mac, since Project Gutenberg offers books that have expired copyrights, and that’s what makes them free.
Now if you already have a PDF and want to convert it to ePub format, you can download Calibre, which is a free converting application that works on Macs, Windows, and Linux.
Now here is the best part, let’s say you find a cool article online that you want to read later, you can use a great service called Instapaper, which gives so many tools and ways to save articles, and share them over many devices and formats.
You can get Instapaper Free App, or Instapaper Pro to get the articles on your iPhone or iPad. (Instapaper Pro is a “+” app which means it woks on the iPhone and iPad as well, with two unique interfaces, so that by itself is worth the money.
Personally I have been using the free version, till I saw how the Pro version looks, and switched to it, all I can say is I really love it.
Enjoy reading, and share the knowledge.

ZAGG Sparq Quick Review
Jan 11th
Update:
My ZaggSparq has just failed to charge or even work, I have checked with many of my friends who have reported the same problem. I Do Not Recommend Buying The ZaggSparq.
Zagg is a company known for their legendary invisibleSHIELD, which helps protects any mobile and GPS devices from scratches, bought many of their shields in the past (they are that good), till one day I got an email from them announcing ZAGG Sparq.
The news got me excited. Personally, it will solve a great issue I have with powering all my gadgets on the go. Since I am always searching for such a power solution for my ever-hungry iPhone(s), iPod, and other gadgets.

I tried different solutions, like carrying a charging cable and power-brick (not very convenient), I have also tried a small faulty battery pack called Kensington Mini Battery Pack, It worked fine for a couple of weeks, soon after it started to lose power capacity. Plus due to its bad design, you will find yourself with a cold black brick dangling out of your iPhone which adds a lot of mass while traveling with the device. Plus it feels like it’s going to get snapped off if you mistakenly hit something (don’t try this at home or anywhere else).

I then started to think of getting the Mophie Juice Pack or Juice Pack air, yet I didn’t find great reviews about both products, plus if Apple decides to change the physical shape of the next iPhone, you can kiss those packs good bye. Another down-side to the juice packs is the fact that they work with a specific device, so you can’t plug an iPod to it (without looking odd).

Enter ZAGG Sparq, when I first saw this I thought that this has the potential to be what I am looking for in a battery pack.
- I don’t want the pack to restrict me to charge only one type of device because of its design.
- I want the pack to give me more then one charge.
- I would like a pack that can charge multiple devices at once.
Out of the box the Sparq looks like Apple’s power brick designed by Darth Vader, it has the same shape as the power brick, yet a bit larger, and it comes in glossy black (hence the Darth Vader connection). I read that that would be an issue since it can show all the fingerprints on it, but thinking practically, a battery pack isn’t something you will be flashing around anyway.
The unit has two (2) USB ports, which means you can charge any two USB powered devices at once. The Sparq offers 6,000 mAh Lithium Polymer battery which has the power to charge an iPhone up to four times. It has 4 yellow lights to indicate power level. So with the USB approach, you can plug in your iPhone, iPod, BlackBerry, Bluetooth headset, digital video camera, or any power hungry device that charges over USB.
I tried it on a flight and it was a charm, I got to watch a movie on my iPhone, then listen to a podcast, and once I was back on the ground I had a full battery ready to go.
Now here are some of the things I didn’t like about the Zagg Sparq and I hope the company will conceder an upgrade to it soon to address those issues.
When you plug the Sparq to charge you won’t find any indicators to tell you whether it is charging or not, the four yellow lights should be used in such a situation, furthermore, you won’t know when the pack is fully charged and ready to go. The only way to check on that is to click on the charge indicator button to see how far it charged.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the leaflet that came with the device recommends that you charge the Sparq for 9 hours to get a full charge. I never checked if the unit would charge in less then 9 hours, but for a unit that gives you 4 full iPhone charges, plugging it over night won’t be an issue in most cases.
So if you’re always on the go, or travel a lot, Zagg Sparq makes it feel like you have a chunk of your wall’s power outlet with you all the time.
The ZAGG Sparq sells originally for about $129.99, but you can get it on their site for $99.99.
One Device that Does it All
Jan 3rd

When I travel I tend to carry so many gadgets with me, I even remember on one occasion where I had to fill a form in one country that required a list of all the electronic devices I had on me.
Here is the breakdown of my digital travel list:
- 1 MacBook Air.
- 2 iPhones.
- 1 iPod nano.
- 2 GPSr Units.
- 2 Battery packs for iPhone/iPod.
- 12 Rechargeable batteries for my GPS units.
- A bag chockfull of cables and USB thumb drives.
- Canon DSLR + 6 SD cards (4GB each, and it’s not like I shoot a lot).
Now I bet you might be wondering why would I need an iPod when I have two iPhones… And why two?
Another question would be, why would I need two GPS units?
There is an answer to all these questions (might start a FAQ page to answer them, but not today). Being such a neat freak, I find it easier to assign a task (or multiple tasks) to each device, to shift my brain gears when I operate it.
Now I am going on a trip, so I decided to try something new and different, going minimalistic (inspired by a friend
).
Here is the new and revised digital travel list:
- One iPhone 3GS.
Let’s see how I can survive with only that. The device that rules them all.

Dec 16th

Here is a great way to integrate your workflow between your Mac and iPhone (iPod touch), with the cut, copy, and paste feature that was introduced in iPhone OS 3.0 now you can take advantage of this feature by taking full control of pieces of information either on the Mac or the iPhone.
Pastebot enables you of collecting your various copied snippets and photos into an archiving system. So let me give you an example, let’s say you find something interesting while browsing on your iPhone, copy it and it is automatically sent to Pastebot, from there you can manipulate the info, then sync it to your Mac with the free Pastebot Sync tool.
![]()
Let me give you another example, you find something on your Mac, that you wish to send over to your iPhone, same thing, run the Pastebot Sync tool, and presto! It there.
You can get Pastebot for $1.99 from the iTunes Store.
